Michael Segerblom, head coach and program director of the USC varsity sailing team, was named a 2009 inductee into the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Hall of Fame and recognized with the Graham Hall Award for outstanding service by a college sailing professional.

Although collegiate sailing is not an NCAA sport, the USC sailing team operated under the USC athletic department from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s when Segerblom was a team member and then its coach. The team now operates independently and is regarded among the top programs on the West Coast.

The Graham Hall Award recognizes organizers, administrators, advisers or coaches who have served the best interests of college sailing at the club/team, conference or national level.

Segerblom was a 1985 All-American sailor at USC, where he captained the team. The 1986 USC graduate was the head sailing coach at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa before becoming USC’s head coach. He guided the Trojan team to its independent status.

As a USC undergraduate, he held several offices in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association (now the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference), including service as president, and for more than 15 years serving as its graduate secretary and conference commissioner. He also has served on the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association’s board of directors and All-America committee and was chair of the communications committee.

In 1992, Segerblom became the executive director of the Pacific Coast Sailing Foundation and the United States Sailing Center, Long Beach. In addition to being the home of the USC varsity sailing team, the Sailing Center is the host of many racing events and learn-to-sail programs, as well as programs for sailors with disabilities and youths-at-risk.

Segerblom has been a U.S. Sailing certified judge since 1988 and has served as the regatta chairman and principal race officer for numerous international, national, regional and local events. He also co-founded the U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Goodwill Regatta.
The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to acknowledge the competitive achievements of undergraduates, as well as the service contributions of individuals whose efforts helped in the establishment, growth and development of college sailing.

In recognition of their significant service to the organization, the names of these inductees will be added to the association’s Hall of Fame display in the Robert Crown Sailing Center at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association is the governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities in the United States and some parts of Canada. It is divided into seven conferences that schedule and administer regattas within established geographic regions.
