USC School of Pharmacy students and faculty had the opportunity to discuss the timely subject of health care reform with elected officials at the school’s annual Legislative Day, held on Nov. 6 at Town & Gown.

The event included presentations from California assembly members, health economists, student leaders, faculty and association representatives, all speaking about the hot national topic of health care reform. Elected officials speaking at the event included California State Assembly members Mike Eng, Ted Lieu and Anthony Portantino, as well as State Sen. Curren Price.

The elected officials challenged the students to get involved and stay involved in the political process, noting the importance of letting representatives know your perspective and helping them to be better informed as they cast votes in Sacramento.

Other speakers included Geoffrey Joyce, an associate professor at USC and an expert on health economics and policy with expertise in insurance design and Medicare; Jeffery Goad, president of the California Pharmacists Association and an associate professor at the School of Pharmacy; and Victor Law, chairman of the United Pharmacists Network Inc.

School of Pharmacy Dean R. Pete Vanderveen welcomed participants to the event. He congratulated Pharm.D. students Parth D. Shah and Tanaz Kohan, the two student organizers of Legislative Day, noting the “innumerable hours they have spent making this event happen.”

Shah is the American Pharmacy Student Alliance director of legislative affairs, and Kohan directs legislative affairs for the National Community Pharmacists Association.

After the presentations, students staged a formal discussion on health care reform and its impact on the pharmacy profession.

The morning event was followed by a health fair at the University Park campus, where students offered Legislative Day attendees, the USC community and local residents an opportunity to be checked for diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension and osteoporosis.

The event was presented by the American Pharmacist Student Alliance and the National Community Pharmacist Association of the USC School of Pharmacy. Sponsors included United Pharmacists Network Inc. and Albertsons/Sav-on.
