Garth Japhet, the creator of Soul City, a multimedia program in South Africa, is the 2009 recipient of the Everett M. Rogers Award for Achievement in entertainment education.
On Sept. 23, Japhet will be recognized as the fifth recipient of the annual award at the Hollywood, Health & Society’s Sentinel for Health Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Hosted by the Norman Lear Center at the USC Annenberg School for Communication, the award is given in memory of Rogers, a former associate dean at the USC Annenberg School.
The Rogers Award honors creativity in the practice of entertainment education that delivers pro-social messages aimed at improving the lives of viewers around the world.
Japhet helped found The Soul City Institute, a project that was developed into a TV serial of the same name. The program now reaches millions of people in eight African countries.
