USC Rossier School of Education Dean Karen Symms Gallagher was honored by the Los Angeles Urban League Oct. 2 at the 88th Urban League Annual Membership Luncheon.

Gallagher received the Urban League’s Social Responsibility Award for her commitment to social justice and her work as a founding Greater Crenshaw Educational Partnership board member.

As partners, USC Rossier, the Los Angeles Urban League and the Tom and Ethel Bradley Foundation encourage teachers, parents, administrators and the community to assume responsibility for rigorous education of all students attending Crenshaw High School and its family of schools.

The award is given to an individual or group that has given unselfishly to the causes of the Urban League over the past year.

Blair H. Taylor, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League and president of the Greater Crenshaw board of directors, presented the Social Responsibility Award to Gallagher.

“Dr. Gallagher is being honored for her unwavering commitment to urban education - especially to the Greater Crenshaw Educational Partnership,” Taylor said.

“Her leadership and her willingness to commit human, financial and intellectual resources have been invaluable in the partnership’s efforts to transform educational outcomes at Crenshaw High School and its family of schools.”

The Greater Crenshaw Educational Partnership was formed in 2007 as an academically informed, neighborhood-based approach to improving educational outcomes. The partnership connects Crenshaw High School students to the Los Angeles Urban League’s Neighborhoods@Work, the USC Rossier School of Education’s resources and programs, and the Bradley Foundation’s leadership training programs.

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this award, and it has been an even greater reward to work with our partners at the Los Angeles Urban League to transform Crenshaw High School and its communities,” Gallagher said. “The partnership and commitment of Rossier, the Urban League and the Tom and Ethel Bradley Foundation promise to positively change the outcomes in this neighborhood for generations to come.”
