Thames & Hudson, $125
More than 400 years after Italian artist Cesare Vecelli published a guide to the world’s dress and customs, Margaret F. Rosenthal, associate professor of Italian at USC College, and her co-author have completed the first English translation. Featuring all the original text, woodcuts and a new introduction, this richly illustrated book is the definitive guide to life in the late 16th century. After a brief history on dress in ancient Rome, the book focuses on the clothing of Italy, then extends its scope worldwide, describing in detail the costumes and manners of everyone from the loftiest rulers to beggars, orphans and gravediggers.
