Religious groups constitute a large part of those who volunteer in the United States, but there have been few efforts to explore the civic life of religious groups broadly. This collection of essays edited by Paul Lichterman, associate professor of sociology and religion at USC College, and C. Brady Potts, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at USC College, investigates the public roles of religious congregations and associations. The book looks at how effective - or ineffective - religious groups are in offering social services, fostering community life and creating discussions about social issues such as homosexuality and welfare reform.
