Art Meets Athletics
USC is the only nationwide university to have two student-athletes represented at the National Collegiate Athletic Association exhibition in Washington, D.C.
USC Roski School of Fine Arts students Robin Hextrum and Dina Hegazy were featured in the exhibition, which is running Jan. 13-17 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.
Hextrum’s painting “In Contemplation of a Race” appears in the print version of NCAA Champions magazine and Hegazy’s photo series “Tanorra” can be seen in the online version of the article (www.NCAAChampionMagazine.org).
The works by Hextrum and Hegazy appeared in the USC exhibition Artletics.
“The student-athletes feel really good about this type of recognition,” said Artletics director Karen Koblitz, a lecturer at the USC Roski School. “They think, ‘Here I am being recognized for something besides athletics.’ It’s an enlightening change of pace for them.”
Dental Duties
USC School of Dentistry alumna Carol G. Summerhays ’78 has been installed as president of the California Dental Association.
In her new role, Summerhays plans to promote volunteer work in the community and raise visibility of the dental school.
After graduating with a doctorate in dental surgery, she served in the U.S. Navy. Later, she began her own practice in San Diego, where she continues to work.
Summerhays attributed part of her success to mentor Clifton Dummett, who said the appointment would help the association target its efforts toward health care in impoverished areas.
Eco Exposure
The USC Department of Business Services’ biannual Supplier Expo will be held Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Town & Gown.
The event features vendors who have negotiated agreements with USC that include price discounts, simplified ordering methods, set delivery arrangements, specialized customer service requirements and efficient billing or payment methods.
Given the emphasis on sustainable purchasing, this year’s event will be called the Supplier ecoExpo. Contract suppliers have been encouraged to showcase goods and services that are environmentally friendly.
