Manuel Pastor Speaks at Urban Summit

The White House Office of Urban Affairs and the Domestic Policy Council held a summit on the future of America’s urban and metropolitan areas this summer, and Manuel Pastor of USC College was one of the policy experts who was invited to participate.
Pastor, the director of USC’s Program for Environmental and Regional Equity as well as a professor of geography and American studies and ethnicity, spoke at a roundtable discussion aimed at helping the Obama administration firm up its urban strategy.
President Obama addressed the group, which included Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis MPA ’81, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and top public policy specialists from across the nation.
Priorities outlined by the president included emphasizing the interdependence between cities, suburbs and exurbs; investing in renewable energy and urban agriculture; neighborhood-level grants that improve cities for children a block at a time; and creating affordable housing in close proximity to jobs and mass transit.
